Chapter Eighteen

The next morning, Tess breezed into the squad room and sat and stared at the dark computer screen. In the grand scheme of things, she’d barely known Scott Holt for a minute or two. He meant nothing. Just another pothole on the interstate of life. Wasn’t denial a wonderful thing?

“Another bad night?” Kozinsky leaned over and tapped her shoulder. “You’re looking a little freaky this morning.”

She straightened. “Don’t know what you mean. I’m dressed appropriately and coordinated. My makeup is flawless. My hair is always a trial, but that’s a given.”

“No. I mean your eyes. They’re wild. Whirling around like a stripper’s tassels. In different directions even.” He tried to demonstrate with his fingers, but failed.

“No such thing.” She booted up her computer, slipped in a flash drive, then pulled up her interviews on the cold case. She’d distract Kozinsky with Jamison and let him continue thinking she didn’t know shit from Shine-ola about the mystery witness.

“On the cold case, we need to buckle down. I figure Mason was our unsub’s first kill. He was inexperienced. Maybe a little careless. Any clues he left behind will lead us to who he is today. Now this Tyler Jamison—”

“The TV news anchor?”

“Yes.” She kept her tone crisp, like her manner. Relationships were a waste of time. Catching this unsub was a million times more important than a bust up with some insignificant PI.

“I’m calling the station to get his résumé. I want to know where this joker’s been from 1994 until present day.”

“You figure him for the doer?” Kozinsky scowled and shook his head.

“There’s something not right with him. He refused a DNA swab. Wants an attorney. I figure his background could use a spotlight.”

“It’s plain to see you’ve got a bug up your ass this morning. Look, this Jamison guy is from around here. Appears our unsub has been all over the U.S. of A. What’re the odds Jamison’s been the same places and at the same time?”

“Well, we won’t know until we do our homework, will we?” she snapped.

“Knock yourself out.”

“Maybe it’s a waste of time, but the sooner we get to it, the sooner we can eliminate him. If that’s what we end up doing.”

Kozinsky’s phone rang. He answered and his voice rose with excitement. “You’re sure it’s Buddy Dawson. And he’s there now?” She watched him scribble an address, then stand.

“Someone just dropped a dime on the Vandy fast food shooter. Says he’s holed up at a cousin’s house in Antioch. Let’s go.”

Scott walked into the office, nodded at Carrie, then headed for his brother’s office. Naturally, Justin wasn’t there.

“Where is he?”

Carried huffed and glared at him over her glasses. “Good morning to you, too.”

“Sorry. Rough night.”

“Oh, really?” Carrie smirked and her eyebrows rose. “Anyone I know?”

He waved his hands. No way was he sharing his pathetic love life with his sister. “No details.”

Rough night indeed. After leaving Tess, he’d driven home and pored over the VICAP case files for hours. The inability to get her off his mind had made most of those hours a waste.
